The Nortel Threat Protection System (TPS) uses intrusion detection combined with intelligent threat analysis to detect, alert, block and report on security events in any network.

The Nortel Intrusion Sensors use a signature-based detection method to examine packets. They are set to look for specific attacks against a protocol, or to look for the conditions of an attack. Each sensor includes a built-in signature database that includes full descriptions of common vulnerabilities and exposures. These signatures adapt to detect worm and virus variants commonly seen over time. Security administrators may adjust all rules to fine-tune detection by specifying source and destination addresses and using inspection point offsets to improve performance and catch threats that are hidden deep within the data payload.
