The primary use for a UV filter is in reducing the amount of ultraviolet light that reaches your film or digital image sensor. Older film was particularly susceptible to UV light, but newer film stocks are relatively immune, as are digital image sensors. However, at higher altitudes, the UV light can affect the resulting photograph.

Nowadays a UV filter is primarily used as a protective device for expensive lenses. When taking photos in outdoor environments, it is better to get dust, twigs, and rain on an inexpensive UV filter than on your expensive lens. Additionally, if the lens is dropped or smacked up against a wall, it is better to let the filter take the fall than your lens.

This filter fits a standard 58mm threaded filter mount on the end of a lens or filter adapter. It comes in a reusable, snap-latch plastic case with foam to protect the filter and keep it from sliding around inside the case.
